adolescence

Reading time < 1 minute

Adolescence describes the process of a young animal becoming an adult. Perhaps you have a dog that suddenly ignores your instructions and simply ignores its own name. Then your pet may be in the phase of adolescence. While puberty refers to the biological change of the body that leads to sexual maturity, adolescence goes beyond that. This time is also referred to as the period of maturity, when emotional and social boundaries are tested and challenged. Just like an adolescent, your once too cute puppy may suddenly rebel and become defiant.

Adolescence is reflected in numerous behaviors. For example, dogs run further away from their owners to demonstrate their independence. In line with this, dogs indicate their hunting behavior and may become a little more aggressive as a result. Many four-legged friends react more often to familiar stimuli with fearful or aggressive behavior. In addition, animals' sexual urges become more apparent during adolescence.

Dealing with Adolescence

During adolescence, it is important to remain calm. Some rules and commands must be re-established and tested. The animals can also be re-accustomed to stimuli that lead to unusual behavior during adolescence. A lot also changes in terms of food, as young animals usually experience another growth spurt and therefore need larger amounts of food. The animals leave BARF for puppies behind and now receive portions for adult dogs. Here you can use our BARF calculator as a guide, which lists the individual components of the food for you, such as muscle meat, fruit and vegetables, and offal for dogs , and calculates them according to the specified measurements. This is how you put together a balanced BARF dog food . And if your four-legged friend turns up his nose at this, it may simply be due to adolescence.
