The BARF FAQ from haustierkost.de answers all the burning questions about biologically appropriate raw feeding, especially for newbies to BARFing dogs and cats. The team at our BARF shop loves animals! We therefore know the importance of a healthy, varied and balanced diet for our small and large furry friends and their well-being is important to us. That's why we are happy to share this knowledge with our customers in our BARF FAQ.
BARF for dogs
Is eating raw meat dangerous for dogs?
The answer is NO. Since dogs have the digestion of a carnivore (meat eater) - which they inherited from their ancestors, the wolves - their digestion is geared towards raw meat. Last but not least, the dog's stomach acid is very strong and can easily digest everything that a dog would eat in the wild, eg the bones, fur and cartilage of a captured animal.
What is the best way to switch?
You can switch a healthy dog from one day to the next. Feed him the last meal of the ready-made food the evening before and start BARFing the next day.
For sensitive dogs, it may be a good idea to let the dog fast first and then slowly start with raw feeding. To do this, first feed several small meat meals and gradually add other components ( vegetables/fruit , herbs , additives , bones , oil ).
How much food does a dog need daily?
The amount of food depends primarily on factors such as age, activity and breed. A rule of thumb is that an adult dog needs about 2% of its body weight in food per day. That is 600 grams of food for a dog that weighs 30 kg. The daily portion of food should consist of about 70-80% animal and 20-30% plant. This calculation is of course only a guideline and should be adapted to the individual needs of your dog. Our BARF calculator will help you calculate the amount of food.
Can I feed puppies raw meat?
This is actually possible. If puppies are fed raw food from the start, they will grow evenly and healthily and will be characterized by the natural agility that we all love in young animals. This is because puppies fed raw meat receive everything they need for growth and development. Incidentally, like all the generations of puppies that have been and still are raised in the wild. Puppies can initially react with diarrhea and vomiting when given a large amount of tripe. You should therefore introduce the puppy slowly with smaller portions.
BARF for cats
Can my cat eat raw meat?
Cats are true carnivores (meat eaters). They need at least 95% meat per day for a healthy metabolism. In nature, their diet consists of mice, birds, fish and insects. It is therefore our responsibility to recreate this composition of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and fiber as naturally as possible. Our high-quality supplementary feed will help you to create a diet plan that is appropriate for the species.
What is the best way to switch?
You can change a healthy cat from one day to the next. This is not always easy with these very stubborn animals. It is best to start with popular types of food such as poultry or fish. Poultry hearts are also popular. Sometimes the cat will accept it better if the meat is cooked a little. It is important that you never let a cat go hungry for a long period of time, as this could damage its organs. Any supplements such as powder and oil should be added slowly.
Does every meal have to be balanced?
That is neither necessary nor possible. The ancestors of today's domestic cats also hunted different prey wherever possible in order to provide themselves with everything they needed through variety. They should therefore ensure that they have a varied and balanced diet, just like nature does.
Is it okay if my cat drinks less water now?
As original desert animals, cats' instincts are programmed to take in liquids through food. Their sense of thirst is not very pronounced due to the natural lifestyle of their ancestors. Nevertheless, they must drink between 30 and 70 milliliters of liquid per day. The moisture content in dry food is just around 12%. This explains why many cats are dehydrated and increasingly suffer from kidney and bladder diseases. Raw feeding is one of the best ways to provide your pet with enough water and prevent kidney problems.
BARF general questions ?
Why can't I find raw pork in the haustierkost.de range?
Pork is not fed raw to cats, dogs or ferrets. This is a precautionary measure because pigs can be infected with the Aujeszky virus.
The Aujeszky virus is a herpes virus whose main host is the pig. Pigs usually survive the viral infection, but the disease is usually fatal for cats, dogs and ferrets.
Can I become infected with germs from raw meat?
As long as you follow common hygiene measures such as washing your hands, cleaning work surfaces/utensils, etc., the risk is no greater than with any other meat preparation.
Why are BARF products not declared as complete feed?
We believe that the nutritional well-being of dogs, cats and ferrets requires variety and not a perfect mixture of synthetic vitamins and minerals that do not occur in nature - keyword prey animals. Due to the fluctuations in the nutrients of natural products, we believe that there is no natural food that provides dogs or cats with all the necessary vitamins and minerals at the same time. We therefore see all of our BARF products as individual or supplementary feed that can form the basis of a healthy diet and categorically reject the term complete feed in this segment.
Where does the processed meat come from?
The meat for our products originally comes from food production, and we mainly use meat trimmings that accrue during cutting. Many of our items are also so-called slaughter by-products, which are rarely used in the German or European food industry because we humans generally do not consider them to be fit for consumption. By reusing these products, we ensure that the animals that have already been slaughtered are fully utilized.
The meat used in our products is subject to veterinary supervision, so it goes without saying that no sick animals are used.
The majority of our products are manufactured in EU-approved feed plants in North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate and Schleswig-Holstein.
All suppliers and we ourselves are subject to constant monitoring by the relevant supervisory authorities. The products that are labelled as organic come from organic farms, the rest are from conventional farming (pasture and stable) and slaughter.
What is the best way to defrost the meat?
We recommend that you let the meat thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Before thawing, please remove the meat from the packaging and place it in a porcelain or glass bowl, which you can cover with a plate, for example, or use the Lock & Lock defrosting box with drip tray available in the shop.
The meat juices contain numerous vital substances, so we recommend that you feed them to your animal. If you feed meat that is still partially frozen, this can lead to gastrointestinal problems. Thawed raw meat can be kept in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
What if I can’t BARF while on vacation?
Holidays are the best time of the year for us and our four-legged friends.
From our own experience we know that it is not always possible to transport enough BARF to your holiday destination.
In addition, the topic of species-appropriate raw feeding is not as widespread everywhere as it is in Germany, so that the search for fresh meat or offal such as tripe often proves to be very difficult or even hopeless.
Since there is usually not enough cooling capacity, delivery to the holiday destination is not always practical.
We therefore recommend our single protein pure meat cans or organic pure meat cans , which, supplemented with fresh fruit and vegetables or our gluten-free fruit/vegetable flakes , as well as oil and our BARF Mineral Vitamin Mix, offer a quick replacement for species-appropriate raw feeding.
If cans are not an alternative due to the high weight, you can also use our grain-free single protein dry food .
Botulism, neosporosis and toxoplasmosis - risk factors for BARFing?
In my opinion, BARFing is the healthiest and most species-appropriate basis for feeding our dogs.
This is confirmed by the results of my many years of practice.
Of course, raw meat also carries a higher risk of bacterial or parasitic contamination:
BOTULISM
This is a bacterial meat poisoning caused by the anaerobic (not
Oxygen-dependent) bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Sources of transmission can be raw,
contaminated meat or improperly frozen vegetables, but also
stale puddles in the summer months.
Clostridia are spore formers and can cause the following symptoms in dogs:
- Paralysis starting in the hind legs
- excessive salivation
- progressive paralysis, which can later also affect the diaphragm and lead to death
- uncoordinated gait
Therapy is difficult.
Risk factor BARFing?
The origin of the meat should ideally be controlled by a veterinarian and
from animals of food grade quality. A continuous cold chain should be ensured,
Frozen meat should be shipped in thermoboxes, for example.
Order larger quantities.
When defrosting meat, open the package or remove the meat completely from the package.
Do not defrost meat in the microwave or in warm water.
Choose short thawing times. Always dispose of bloated packaging, freezer burn
However, there is no reason for disposal.
NEOSPOROSIS
This is an infection with the protozoan Neospora caninum, which causes
Dogs are the definitive hosts. Cattle often serve as intermediate hosts. Neosporas belong to the
Coccidia and form cysts in their definitive host.
The main source of infection in dogs is raw meat.
The clinical picture is characterized by neurological deficits: meningitis, paralysis
of the hind legs, uncoordinated gait, epilepsy, but also muscle and liver or even
Pneumonia can occur.
This disease is also often difficult to treat, as it is often only diagnosed late
is recognized.
Dogs can also remain asymptomatic and excrete cysts in their feces, through which the
Ruminants can become infected again.
Risk factor BARFing?
In my practice, all owners are instructed to NEVER feed fresh meat.
If meat is frozen or heated, the risk of infection drops to almost zero.
TOXOPLASMOSIS
This is an infection with the pathogen Toxoplasma gondii.
The main source of infection for dogs are cats, which spread oocysts in their fur through their grooming behavior.
distributed and also excreted in the feces or raw meat (also from captured rodents).
Toxoplasmosis is a zoonosis, which means that humans can become infected from cats,
But not dogs.
The dog may develop the following symptoms:
- recurrent fever
- Liver and lung inflammation
- Loss of appetite
- Eye infections
- neurological problems
The treatment is antibiotics.
Risk factor BARFing?
Here too, the meat should be frozen thoroughly before being fed thawed.
Freezing for 24 hours at -18° C is considered sufficient to kill infectious oocysts in
to kill flesh.
The thawing time, checking the meat packaging and the meat for integrity and
The usual hygiene measures should of course also be taken into account.
By freezing the meat, maintaining a constant cold chain and prompt shipping
You can greatly minimize the risk of infection for your dog when eating raw meat.
