Quarantine with a dog: what you should consider - haustierkost.de

Quarantine with a dog is a scenario that many people have experienced and continue to experience over the past two years. Quarantine already brings with it such great challenges: Who does the shopping? What are the rules for other people who may live in the household? How can you best avoid each other? For households with dogs, this situation is even more difficult. That's why we want to show you what you can do if you are quarantined with a dog.

Quarantine with a dog: Who walks the dog?

When you are in quarantine with your dog, you should of course pay attention to both your own needs and those of your animal friend. During quarantine, there is a strict ban on going out - even a short walk in the woods or around the block is out of the question. It is of course easiest if there is one person in the household who does not have to adhere to the quarantine - in this case, you should find out exactly which rules apply in your area.

If you live alone or the whole household has to be quarantined, you can ask people you trust for help, who ideally already know your dog. It is important to avoid physical contact when handing over the dog. In addition, the leash can be disinfected, for example, or you can use your own leash. Neighbors are often willing to help too. If there are no people you can ask for help at the moment, it is also possible to book a so-called dog walking service. They do exactly what it sounds like and walk your dog. Of course, you should make sure to choose a reputable provider. This may be slightly more expensive, but it is also safer. They are often dog lovers who are well versed in dealing with different animals.

If it's really "dog weather" outside or you don't want to leave your pet in someone else's hands for too long, you can of course keep it busy at home. Play with your dog, challenge your pet and maybe even teach it a new trick, for which it will of course be rewarded. This way, quarantine with a dog remains varied! If necessary, you can also have a garden at your disposal in which you can romp around or in which your dog can do its business.

Quarantine with a dog: food and other errands

When you are in quarantine with a dog, the same applies to running errands for your dog's daily needs as for walking it. Ideally, friends, family or acquaintances are available who can take on these important tasks if you are running out of food. When it comes to food, it is always advisable to have a small supply in the house that is enough for about a week. This way, you can provide your dog with high-quality BARF meat and the other important nutritional components as usual even during quarantine. If you do run out of food during quarantine, you can conveniently order online from our BARF shop and you will receive the food delivered to your door by post as usual. Canned BARF meat can also be a valuable help during this time.

It can potentially be difficult if your pet has a medical emergency while you are in quarantine with your dog. In this case, it is definitely helpful to have a trusted person who can react quickly if the worst happens. Alternatively, you can call your veterinary practice to organize transport if necessary. Less urgent matters should be postponed until after the quarantine, depending on your discretion. Here, too, consulting with the practice will help you make the right decisions.

By the way: According to the current state of research, dogs seem to be rather insensitive to COVID-19. This is indicated by studies in which antibodies were found in a small proportion of the dogs tested that lived in a household with infected people, but never active viruses. According to the Federal Research Institute for Animal Health, there were 13 cases in Germany by January 2022 in which COVID-19 was transmitted from humans to animals. These included twelve cats and one dog.

Once you are released from quarantine, your dog will surely be looking forward to regular walks and other activities with you again!
