Frozen meat is ideal for feeding your pet raw, organically appropriate food. The raw meat is frozen shortly after slaughter and remains in the cold chain until it ends up in your pet's bowl. Here we would like to show you why frozen meat is so suitable for BARF and what you should pay attention to when thawing and feeding.
How the frozen meat gets to you
As the name suggests, frozen meat is frozen. This is necessary so that the raw meat can be stored and transported over a longer period of time. In this cooled state, the meat stays fresh and germs can spread much more slowly. This is particularly important for BARF meat , because dogs and cats only need a small proportion of their own body weight as food each day. So that meat, offal, etc. can be stored comfortably and with some lead time, frozen meat is the only alternative to buying fresh meat several times a week.
If you order frozen meat from us, it will be taken from the freezer together with the other items in your order into a reusable Styrofoam cooling box. So that we can guarantee that the cold chain is maintained during transport, a minimum order quantity of eight kilograms applies for frozen meat. With this quantity, the items cool each other down and can usually be transported safely in the insulated box for several days. If a product arrives in a thawed state, you can refreeze it without hesitation if the core temperature inside the box is below + 7° C. If you are unsure, our customer service will be happy to help you.
Thawing frozen meat for dogs and cats
To gently defrost frozen meat for your dog or cat, it is best to take it out of your freezer or chest a few hours before feeding time. Open it and place it in a bowl, cover it with a clean cloth or paper and put everything in the fridge so that the BARF meat can thaw . If you want to feed your dog or cat early in the morning, you can also gently store and defrost the meat overnight.
If you have thawed frozen meat that has already been cut into cubes or minced, you should mix it well with a fork before feeding it to find any foreign objects that may have found their way into the food. If you cut the meat yourself, you should be careful not to feed it pieces that are too big for your pet to choke on - especially if it is a glutton.
Why frozen meat is preferable to heated meat
Freezing means that the frozen meat retains the nutrients that are important for your animal after slaughter, which are lost when heated and then only artificially added back, if at all. If you need to do it quickly, you can also help thawing the frozen meat with short stints in the microwave - although gentle thawing is usually preferable. When using the microwave, you should also make sure that the meat temperature does not exceed room temperature.
