Undercoat

Reading time < 1 minute

The undercoat serves as a warm coat for the dog in the winter months. It grows particularly thickly, meaning that practically no air can reach the skin of the four-legged friend. This protects most dogs - even short-haired breeds - from the cold of the winter months.

While the undercoat is an ideal help for the dog in winter, it becomes an increasing burden as temperatures rise. Because no air can reach the skin, the animals warm up more quickly. There is also a risk of matting if dead hairs from the undercoat mix with the new summer hairs. If these dead hairs remain in the coat for too long, bacteria build up, which leads to an unpleasant smell. This is why the dog sheds the undercoat again - and you can support him during the coat change.

With a simple undercoat brush, you can remove most of your dog's loose hair. Start with the top coat so that nothing gets tangled later and then work on it piece by piece. Pay particular attention to the loins, neck and chest, back, both flanks and the drooping ears. After each brushing, empty the undercoat brush so that your dog is free of undercoat in a short time.

After about six weeks, the dog's undercoat will have completely detached. To achieve this, you should ideally brush it daily, once in the morning and once in the evening, or once particularly thoroughly. If necessary, you can get further tips at the dog salon.
