BARF usually contains an animal component, because while we humans often evaluate the animal component of individual ingredients, BARF dog food and cat food tends to look at the entire animal component. This includes all feed that is obtained from other animals, including muscle meat , offal, bones and cartilage, as well as blood and fat.
Normally, an animal portion of around 70 to 80 percent is recommended for BARF for dogs. Of this, around 50 percent is muscle meat, 20 percent (meaty) bones and cartilage, 15 percent tripe and omasum, and 15 percent various innards including liver , lungs , spleen , and kidney . The plant portion includes fruit and vegetables for dogs as well as various supplements and is between 20 and 30 percent.
For cats, a 90 percent animal portion of BARF is recommended, but this can even rise to 95 percent, as cats are often considered carnivores . Add some nutritional supplements such as salmon oil and algae lime to the BARF to complete the meal. Instead of algae lime, you can also feed bones and cartilage, which provide the furry friend's body with important calcium.
