When it comes to BARF, nutritional supplements for dogs often play an important role. For the dog to live as healthily as possible, all of the animal's nutritional needs should of course be covered by its normal diet. However, it can happen that certain minerals, oils or vitamins have to be added in other ways. That's why nutritional supplements exist.
Nutritional supplements for dogs: these are the options available with BARF
The substances required for nutritional supplements when BARFing are primarily vitamins, oils and minerals . If used correctly, these can be used to prevent deficiency symptoms. For example, salmon oil, which is rich in omega fatty acids, can have a positive nutritional effect on the development of your dog's skin and coat. Products such as eggshell meal and horse bone meal with their high calcium content or collagen powder, on the other hand, support bones and joints so that they develop correctly and stay strong for a long time. Cod liver oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D and can also have a positive effect on calcium metabolism. Another classic among supplementary feed for dogs is the green-lipped mussel. The powdered green-lipped mussel meat is particularly suitable for animals suffering from joint diseases as well as for younger and older animals, because it is able to support the stabilization and regeneration of connective tissue structures.
Adding nutritional supplements to BARF
You can usually mix the BARF food supplement directly into your animal's food. For example, add oils directly to the bowl, mix the powder well with the meat - especially if the meat is minced or otherwise chopped - or hide tablets in a treat. This way, even animals that are picky about food should be able to accept the food supplement well. When it comes to dosage, always stick to the instructions on the packaging or, if necessary, discuss the amounts directly with your trusted veterinary practice - this way you can avoid accidental over- or under-dosing in advance.
Superfoods as nutritional supplements for BARF
Some superfoods are also suitable as a nutritional supplement for dogs when BARFing. Spirulina and chlorella powder, both made from algae, are rich in various minerals and amino acids. Moringa also contains plenty of proteins, vitamins and minerals. If a BARF ration does not contain enough meat containing taurine (for example muscle meat or beef liver), you should mix in some taurine. You can of course get this, like many other products, in our BARF shop .
