Cod liver oil is a possible dietary supplement for dogs and cats. Dogs in particular can benefit from regular consumption of cod liver oil, as it is mainly made from fish such as cod and contains a high amount of vitamin D.
Dogs do not produce vitamin D themselves, or only produce it to a very small extent, because they lack the ability to produce it in their own bodies. For example, humans can convert cholesterol built up in the skin through the effects of UV radiation. Cod liver oil is therefore a possible source for dogs to obtain the vitamin D they need: vitamin D is important for the absorption of phosphorus and calcium and therefore for the formation of healthy bones and teeth. In our BARF shop you can get a variety of vitamins and minerals for your dog.
Furthermore, cod liver oil can be used to absorb vitamin A. However, there are also other alternatives such as liver and carrots to meet the requirements within the BARF diet.
When feeding oil blubber, it is important to use the right amount of oil for the animal, otherwise an overdose can easily occur. Depending on the animal's weight, half to two teaspoons of oil blubber should be added to the feed twice a week.
