crude ash

crude ash

Reading time < 1 minute

The crude ash in dog food and cat food indicates the proportion of inorganic substances. This is determined by incineration for six hours at 550°C. During this process, organic compounds as well as proteins, fats and carbohydrates are burned. What remains are inorganic compounds such as the minerals calcium, phosphorus, iron, copper, zinc and many more. Crude ash in high-quality dog food or cat food is almost identical to the mineral content. It is a mandatory declaration on the feed packaging.

How Crude Ash Occurs in Dog Food and Cat Food

At first glance, the crude ash content in BARF dog food is low, as BARF meat alone only contains comparatively few minerals. Accordingly, the values here level off at one to two percent. In dog flakes made from vegetables, the value rises to around four percent due to the various ingredients. In grain-free dry food , in which the BARF for cats and dogs is combined with potatoes, for example, the crude ash content is up to ten percent.

You can increase the proportion of crude ash in dog food and cat food yourself by adding our recommended minerals and other supplements. In the BARF shop you will find mineral-vitamin mixtures that, of course, have a high proportion of crude ash of almost 40 percent. Your dog food and cat food can benefit from this.

At this point, however, it should be mentioned that pet food does not automatically become more valuable the higher the crude ash content. Instead, the more crude ash there is, the less digestible the food becomes. A balanced mixture with proteins is an advantage here.
