castration

Reading time < 1 minute

Castration of dogs and cats is a common method of preventing the animals from reproducing and also preventing diseases. The males' testicles and the females' ovaries (and sometimes the uterus) are surgically removed. Castration of dogs and cats is now considered an absolutely routine procedure that is usually completed in just an hour. You can usually even take your four-legged friend home with you straight away afterwards.

If you want to castrate a cat or dog, wait until they have reached sexual maturity. This point in time has become established because early castrations have led to an increase in illnesses such as spleen tumors, prostate cancer or incontinence. At the same time, however, castration of dogs and cats can also help to cure illnesses. For example, the procedure is absolutely necessary in the case of malignant testicular tumors, inflammation or torsion of the testicles. In addition, aggressive behaviour caused by an undescended testicle can be alleviated if you castrate your dog. In principle, however, changes in behaviour are not a reason for castration and this justification for an operation is not permitted under the Animal Welfare Act.

After the operation, the four-legged friend is prescribed plenty of rest. The animals often wear a type of trousers or a neck brace so that the wound can heal in peace. Painkillers prescribed by the veterinarian can usually be administered yourself and mixed into the BARF dog food or cat food. Two weeks after castration, dogs and cats are usually completely fit again. The stitches are removed and life can go on in a relaxed manner.
