Dalmatian

Reading time < 1 minute

If you want to BARF your Dalmatian, you are probably already aware of a special feature of this breed of dog. After all, it is now widely known that a large proportion of Dalmatians live with a genetic defect that makes them prone to the formation of urinary stones. When BARFing Dalmatians, you react to this circumstance by feeding them food that is as low in purines as possible. Purine is part of the cell nucleus and is usually converted into uric acid and allantoin and excreted. However, due to the genetic defect in Dalmatians, this conversion does not take place, which is why the uric acid level rises.

When BARFing Dalmatians, it is therefore important to use ingredients that are as low in purines as possible. In particular, offal such as kidney and liver, poultry skin, dry chews, yeast and some types of fish such as anchovies or mackerel have a high purine content and therefore require alternatives. When creating a BARF menu for Dalmatians, high-quality muscle meat with 20 to 25 percent fat is becoming increasingly important, as it can replace offal in particular, but also larger amounts of tripe and omasum as well as components rich in connective tissue. We also recommend cod in BARF dog food as an alternative to the types of fish mentioned above.

Have your four-legged friend's urine tested regularly at a veterinary practice, because despite all precautions, urinary stones can still form. For male dogs, we recommend a quarterly visit, while for female dogs, a six-monthly examination is sufficient. The examinations will also tell you whether you are BARFing your Dalmatian correctly or whether your Dalmatian's BARF diet needs some fine-tuning. The advantage here is, of course, that you can adapt your BARF feeding plan down to the smallest detail and are independent of ready-made mixtures.
