Atopic dermatitis in dogs and cats describes an allergic reaction to normally harmless substances. As in humans, this environmental allergy, also known as atopy, is triggered by common substances, microorganisms or plants. These can include pollen, dust, mites or weeds. Accordingly, atopic dermatitis in dogs and cats often occurs in spring and summer, when pollen levels and plant growth are at their highest. Dust and mites, on the other hand, can have an effect all year round.

Atopic dermatitis in dogs and cats primarily appears on the head, paws, groin and stomach. The allergic reactions cause redness and often severe itching. Cats often lick the affected areas excessively until they become bald. Both species also tend to scratch their skin.

There are two possible approaches to treatment: In causal therapy, for example, immunotherapy is used to try to reduce the allergy itself so that mites, pollen, etc. no longer trigger reactions. If this approach does not work, symptomatic therapy comes to the fore. This includes using food oils for dogs or sprays such as VeaVet JuckEx forte to relieve itching and redness. Ideally, you should get tips and advice from a veterinary practice to get the best help for atopic dermatitis for your dog or cat.
