Ascophyllum nodosum is the name given to a type of brown algae, which is called knotted kelp in German. The algae are used in animal husbandry as a feed supplement because they contain a high proportion of vitamins A, B and E. They also contain nutrients and trace elements such as calcium, sodium, potassium, zinc and iron. Ascophyllum nodosum is particularly popular due to its comparatively high content of iodine . A lack of this trace element can cause deficiency symptoms in dogs and cats just as it does in humans. Humans also benefit from the fact that they can store small amounts of iodine in their bodies. Dogs and cats do not have this storage ability. Accordingly, iodine must be constantly added to the BARF diet from various sources.
Ascophyllum nodosum is ideal for dogs and cats to counteract iodine deficiency. For cats, just a pinch of high-quality seaweed meal is enough to cover their daily needs. Small dogs and young dogs need about a third of a measuring spoon, while two thirds are enough for large dogs. In terms of taste, Ascophyllum nodosum may remind your dog or cat of the sea, as the many nutrients of the sea are largely retained in the meal and have a corresponding effect on the taste.
