In the case of diseases such as leishmaniasis when allopurinol is administered , a low-purine diet is recommended for dogs, as is the case for dog breeds such as the Dalmantine. Due to their special metabolic situation, these dogs are only able to break down and excrete the uric acid produced by the breakdown of purines to a limited extent. In both cases, urinary, bladder or kidney stones can be the result.
