World Cat Day: International Cat Day - haustierkost.de

Did you know? World Cat Day is just around the corner! That's right, August 8th is International Cat Day. A reason to celebrate, because our house cats are very popular. Why should we celebrate that? It's simple - we're celebrating the fact that cats exist. Every cat has something very special about them, which is why we can't imagine our homes without them.

Cats in Germany: our favorites

Cats are Germany's most popular pet. In 2022, around 15.2 million cats lived in Germany, meaning around 24 percent of households owned a purring four-legged friend. Let's be honest, our cuddly and playful darlings have long been family members. But how exactly does this relate to World Cat Day?

Origin of World Cat Day

World Cat Day has been celebrated since 2002. People and animals celebrate their coexistence and our darlings are especially honored on World Cat Day. But unfortunately not every cat gets to enjoy this. World Cat Day is intended to raise awareness for cats and cat species. An occasion to also draw attention to endangered cat species.

Endangered cat species: Animal love beyond one's own home

When we talk about the endangered cat species in Europe, we are usually talking about the European wildcat. Interference with nature through increasing road traffic and resettlement is reducing the natural habitat of wild cats. There is also another problem: the proliferation of wild and domestic cats.

In order to prevent the reproduction of free-living cats and to avoid possible unwanted mating between wild and domestic cats, the castration of outdoor cats is necessary. This also stops the reproduction of domestic cats, because the unwanted reproduction of free-living animals leads to a drastic increase in the cat population and overcrowded animal shelters.

But how can I take action?

Here are some ideas on how you can actively support animal shelters:

  • Petting cats: Giving shy cats love and affection is an important task that is rewarded! Because cats give you so much back with their loving purring!
  • Manual help: Are you handy? Perfect! Often the animal shelter lacks the necessary hands. From planning to repair work - there is plenty of work.
  • Feeding and cleaning: Just like in your own home, there are daily tasks to be done, such as feeding or cleaning the litter boxes – any help is welcome.

Whether at home or in a shelter, are you ready for World Cat Day? Remember that World Cat Day is an opportunity to celebrate the beauty and happiness that cats bring to our lives. Ultimately, cats not only need our protection, but also our affection. So on World Cat Day, they deserve something extra: an extra portion of treats combined with lots of cuddles!
