wolf

Reading time 2 minutes

The wolf belongs to the dog family and is the largest predator of its species. Various subspecies of the wolf are found almost all over the world. Europe and Asia are, however, the most common areas for packs. Wolves were domesticated thousands of years ago to become the domestic dog we know today. As a result, the wolf, unlike its mostly tame relative, was persecuted and almost completely eradicated in parts of Europe. The reasons for this were the increasing livestock farming, which was repeatedly disrupted by the wolf, as it mostly finds its prey in ungulates. Attacks on humans were also of importance, which is why the wolf was only gradually given protection in the 1980s and 1990s. This enabled the predator's population to be controlled and rebuilt.

Wolf and Dog in Comparison

Alongside the wolf, the domestic dog we know today has developed over the course of many years. This makes the wolf the ancestral form of the dog. The differences between the members of the species vary greatly given the many dog breeds that have been bred. Compared to the average dog, the wolf has a longer snout and longer legs. The ears, however, are shorter and the wolf usually carries its tail hanging down rather than high in the air like many dogs do. A look into the wolf's mouth reveals closer-set incisors and longer fangs in the upper jaw.

When it comes to food, wolves and domestic dogs have sometimes diverged considerably. However, raw feeding is particularly appropriate for dogs, as they are direct relatives of wolves. This is why BARFing is becoming increasingly popular for dogs . Your four-legged friend enjoys food that is as natural as possible in the form of raw meat, possibly bones and fur, fruit and vegetables , as well as vitamins, oils and minerals . BARF meat is therefore processed as little as possible before it is frozen for preservation purposes. This way, as a dog owner, you always know what your dog is eating and keep him close to his natural relative - the wolf.

In the BARF shop at haustierkost.de you will find a wide selection of BARF dog food that you can put together to create a balanced diet for your four-legged friend. If you want to be sure about the correct composition of the food, we recommend our BARF calculator . We are also happy to answer any questions you may have.
